Sustainable Development Working Group

To improve the efficiency in implementing the Strategy on Sustainable Development, an inter-ministerial working group for sustainable development was also created by a directive of the State Secretary on 7 March 2008.

Its main task is to coordinate:

• the implementation and supervision of the execution of the Estonian National Strategy on Sustainable Development, Sustainable Estonia 21, by compiling an annual report to the Government of the Republic and a report to the European Commission once every two years on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Strategy of the European Union and the results achieved;

• the making of proposals to supplement and amend the National Strategy on Sustainable Development, Sustainable Estonia 21, as far as goals, measures and activities are concerned, depending on national needs or the orientations of the European Union;

• the development of a system of monitoring indicators for sustainable development, thus creating a method for analysing Estonia’s sustainable development, to benchmark it against other states and track the implementation of the measures of Sustainable Estonia 21;

• the development of the positions of Estonia in the context of the European Union Sustainable Development Strategy;

• information exchange and the introduction of better practices in the area of sustainable development.

The working group is headed by the Strategy Director and the members of the working group are representatives of ministries concerned with the implementation of the strategy (the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Ministry of Education and Research, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) at the level of deputy secretary general and head of department, and representatives of Statistics Estonia.

Estonia’s report on the implementation of the European Union Sustainable Development Strategy was compiled with the help of the working group for sustainable development. This report contributes to the European Commission progress report on the implementation of the European Union Sustainable Development Strategy to be completed by autumn 2007.
