20 August marks the 30th anniversary of the restoration of independence of the Republic of Estonia, the events of which will be launched by the youth programme that starts today. The only certain common festivity taking place this summer is being prepared for August.
‘The virus has put a strong stamp on life in Estonia as a whole, which makes it more important to celebrate our common victories and successes,’ said Jaanus Rohumaa, Head of the working group for the 30th anniversary of the restoration of independence. ‘Characteristic of the time, the youth programme will begin with digital events; only after the virus is under control, will we reach physical meetings,’ noted Rohumaa.

Youth-oriented activities and exhibitions travelling all over Estonia are both planned for the spring-summer 30th anniversary programme. ‘The exact programme will be revealed by the beginning of summer. The possibilities for celebrating the big anniversary depend very much on how we collectively manage to suppress the spread of coronavirus,’ said Rohumaa. ‘There is only one thing that can be promised for certain – there will be a big, united and Estonia-wide night song festival on 20 August. Whether everyone can participate via television, or will we be able to meet after a long time, depends on the spread of the virus.’
According to Madis Somelar, Head of the youth programme, for example, in cooperation with the Estonian Class Teachers Association, students from grades 1 to 6 are invited to prepare portfolios on the topic ‘Restoring Estonian statehood’; in cooperation with the Estonian Society for Education through Art, however, students from grades 4 to 12 are invited to take part in the digital collage competition ‘TaasPILDIL’ (‘BackInThePICTURE’). ‘We will also start with virtual theme days, where young people can meet people who participated in the momentous events 30 years ago,’ said Somelar.
The youth programme begins today, on 24 April, with the virtual theme day ‘Europe during the Cold War’, where foreign academics and history teachers speak about Europe during the Cold War.
20 August marks the 30th anniversary of the restoration of independence of the Republic of Estonia. The programme of events is coordinated by the Government Office.
