The working group attached to the Government Office which is charged with the task of assessing monuments has recommended that all memorial tablets bearing Red Army symbols be removed from public space. The memorial complex at Maarjamäe, which is on state land, has become the final resting place of victims of many wars over the years. Their grave markers and the other elements forming part of the memorial will not be removed.
The government recently made the decision to remove monuments which feature symbols of and inappropriate messages pertaining to the Soviet occupation from public space in Estonia.
